It has been a great first semester for YEA! MN this year. I met most of the students for the first time at our Steering Committee kick-off meeting in August. It was two days after I started and I had little idea what to expect. 15 students and myself had pizza in one of the co-chairs attic bedrooms, and while the temperatures are frigid now, it was a sticky, hot, and humid first meeting. Noneless, I was inspired by their plans for the semester and ability to work as a team. From that first meeting on I have not been let down.
Hi, our names are Tessa Ruff and Sophia Showalter. We are members of the YEA! MN Steering Committee as well as leaders of the Hopkins High School Earth Club. Recently, we applied for and received a grant through the Hopkins Education Foundation, a nonprofit that supports the Hopkins School District.
The Will Steger Foundation is proud to launch our 2013-14 Intergenerational Mentorship Program in partnership with the REAMP Network. This innovative mentorship model values both participants as learners and teachers, and supports 21 pairs of young and veteran environmental leaders across the Midwest.
The Will Steger Foundation is honored to be a recipient of 2013 Hennepin County Green Partners Environmental Education Program funding to expand and deepen our Youth Environmental Activists of Minnesota (YEA! MN) program. Hennepin County provides funding and support to organizations to implement projects that empower residents to reduce waste, increase recycling, reduce toxicity, conserve energy and protect water quality.
This fall the Will Steger Foundation brought 17 high schoolers to Power Shift 2013 through our Youth Environmental Activists of Minnesota (YEA! MN) program. A national youth climate conference that drew over 6,000 to Pittsburgh, PA, Power Shift 2013 was a historic convergence to “build a stronger and more vibrant climate movement to fight fracking, divest from fossil fuels, demand climate justice, and build a clean energy economy that works for everyone.”
