Our can-do spirit is what gives us the ability to overcome challenges that may seem impossible. For the Will Steger Foundation, this spirit is what compels us to take a stand in the face of a crisis and right now there is a global warming crisis brewing over the future of our planet. Global warming isn’t just affecting the Arctic; it is affecting all of us – from changes to our natural resources, to affects on wildlife and human communities, to weather patterns we no longer recognize. Addressing global warming provides a unique opportunity to balance our commitment to protect the environment and create new jobs. There is no denying global warming is a threat we have to face. That is why we are organizing local communities, educators and youth, meeting with state agency staff and our elected officials to promote renewable energy and initiating dialogues and critical discussions with friends and supporters.

It has been another busy and inspiring month for the Will Steger Foundation. We are excited to work with a new administration on global warming solutions and clean energy opportunities in 2009, from supporting Minnesota and the Midwest’s leadership in leading a clean energy future to supporting a K-12 educational program around the 2009 international Copenhagen negotiation, and restoring the integrity of science in K-12 education and policy. With your continued support, WSF is poised and ready to do what we do best.
It has become a tradition for Will to hit the road each fall with several speaking engagements. Last year Will spoke to over 5,000 people in only five weeks; and this year, we anticipate the same reach. Will spoke to several international audiences this month, including a Swiss Climate Forum, MN-Austrian Forum on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change at the University of Minnesota and the International Bioenergy Days at Minnesota State University-Mankato.
With the support of our Board of Directors, we are excited to start a strategic plan this fall to share our accomplishments and refine our focus and direction for the years ahead. In conjunction with the Republican National Convention, Will Steger joined thousands of youth on the Capitol Lawn on September 2nd and than celebrated Xcel Energy’s leadership as the #1 wind energy provider at an event in downtown Minneapolis with Paul Douglas, Senator Norm Coleman and Minneapolis and St. Paul Mayors Rybak and Coleman.
It has been a very busy and rewarding summer. In late July we welcomed Will back from Greenland where he and three members of the Ellesmere Island Expedition saw signs of rising thaw levels and large glacial melt on the ice cap. We held an informal gathering upon Will’s return with the Minnesota Norwegian community at the home of the Norwegian Consular General on Lake Minnetonka.
