Congressman Ellison wrote a great piece in the Huffington Post highlighting the need for the Environmental Protection Agency to pass strong carbon pollution standards for new and existing coal-burning power plants and called on Xcel Energy to transition Units 1 & 2 of the Sherco coal plant- Minnesota's largest carbon emitter- to clean energy.
October 2nd marked the ceremonial signing of Minnesota’s Clean Energy and Jobs bill, also known as the Omnibus Jobs and Economic Development bill (HF729 / SF 1057). Will and I were honored to join Governor Dayton and chief authors Senator John Marty, Representative Melissa Hortman, and members of the Clean Energy and Jobs coalition for this special opportunity.
Until recent years, the detrimental effects of coal and its heavy carbon dioxide emissions had been ignored due to the nation’s immense coal reserves, as well as its dependence on coal for energy. However, President Obama has now publicly declared a war on coal, striving to make America the chief natural gas producer in order to manage climate change, as well as to abate carbon emissions.
